Morocco Travel FAQ
Honest answers from Abdel, your Morocco travel designer
Morocco can feel mysterious, exciting, and a little overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. Below are the questions travelers ask me most often, from safety and visas to what to wear, money, Ramadan, and the Sahara.
This isn’t a generic FAQ. It’s based on real conversations with real travelers, and on years of designing private journeys across the country.
1. Is Morocco safe for travelers?
Short answer: Yes, Morocco is generally safe for travelers, including solo travelers and families, as long as you use common sense and respect local customs.
Like any country, there are things to be aware of: pickpocketing in busy medinas, unofficial guides, and the usual travel scams in touristy areas. Violent crime against tourists is rare, and Morocco has a strong tourism infrastructure and visible security presence in major cities and sites.
When you travel with US Morocco Tours, you’re not navigating alone. We use trusted drivers, vetted local partners, and clear guidance so you feel confident, not stressed. Our team is always nearby, discreetly present in the background, keeping an eye on the flow of the day, anticipating interactions, and ensuring that you’re never placed in an uncomfortable or unwanted situation. You explore freely, while we quietly take care of everything behind the scenes.
2. Do I need a visa to visit Morocco?
Most travelers from the US, Canada, the EU, UK, Australia, and many other countries do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. You just need a passport with at least six months’ validity from your date of entry and at least one blank page for the entry stamp.
If you’re unsure, we’ll help you check your specific nationality’s requirements before you book flights.
3. When is the best time to visit Morocco?
Morocco is a year-round destination, but the best months for most travelers are:
Spring: March–May
Fall: late September–November
These periods offer pleasant temperatures in most regions, comfortable for walking in medinas, exploring the desert, and enjoying the coast.
While summer can be very hot in the interior and the desert, it is the ideal season for Morocco’s coastal cities.
The Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts offer refreshing breezes, beautiful beaches, and a relaxed seaside atmosphere perfect for travelers who enjoy sun, swimming, surfing, and long days by the water. Cities like Tangier, Asilah, Essaouira, Agadir, and Oualidia come alive in the summer, with beach clubs, fresh seafood, water sports, and cooler temperatures than the inland regions. If you love the ocean, summer is one of the best times to experience Morocco.
We design your itinerary around season and region so you’re in the right place at the right time.
4. What should I wear in Morocco?
Morocco is a Muslim-majority country, but it’s also very open to the West and is used to tourism and quite relaxed in many areas.
Women: Light, breathable clothing that covers shoulders and at least midthigh is respectful and practical. In big cities, you’ll see everything from jeans and dresses to more modest outfits. A scarf is useful for sun, wind, and occasional religious sites.
Men: T-shirts, polos, and shorts or light pants are fine.
You don’t need to dress “perfectly”; you just want to be comfortable, respectful, and practical. For medinas and rural areas, slightly more modest clothing helps you feel more at ease and less conspicuous.
When we plan your trip, we’ll give you a packing list tailored to your season and route.
5. Is Morocco suitable for solo female travelers?
Yes, many solo female travelers visit Morocco every year.
That said, it can feel intense at times: attention in the streets, persistent vendors, and cultural differences can be tiring if you’re alone.
Traveling with US Morocco Tours gives you:
• A clear structure and safe logistics
• Trusted drivers and local contacts
• Handpicked riads and hotels
• Guidance on where to go, when, and how
• You’re independent, but never unsupported.
6. What currency is used, and how do I pay for things?
Morocco’s currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD)
• ATMs are widely available in cities and larger towns.
• Credit cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and shops, but cash is still king in souks, small cafés, and rural areas.
• You cannot legally export large amounts of dirhams, so it’s best to withdraw as needed.
On our trips, we’ll advise you when and where to withdraw, and roughly how much you’ll need for tips, meals, and shopping.
7. Is alcohol available in Morocco?
Yes, alcohol is available, but not everywhere and not in the same way as in Europe or North America.
• Many hotels, riads, and higher-end restaurants serve wine, beer, and sometimes cocktails.
• Supermarkets in larger cities often have alcohol sections.
• In traditional medinas and smaller towns, alcohol may be limited or discreet.
We can recommend riads, hotels, and restaurants that align with your preferences, whether you’d like a glass of Moroccan wine with dinner or prefer a completely alcoholfree environment.
8. What is Ramadan like for travelers?
Ramadan is the holy month of fasting for Muslims. During this time:
• Locals fast from Dawn to Sunset.
• Some restaurants and cafés may have reduced hours.
• Evenings come alive with family gatherings and a beautiful sense of community.
Tourists are not expected to fast, but it’s respectful to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight in more traditional areas. Hotels and many restaurants still serve food as usual for travelers.
Traveling during Ramadan can be a deeply meaningful cultural experience. We’ll design your days around the rhythm of the month.
9. How do I get around Morocco?
Morocco has a good mix of transportation options:
• Private driver: The most comfortable and flexible way to travel between cities, this is what we use for our trips.
• Trains: Comfortable and efficient between major cities like Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, and Tangier.
• Domestic flights: Useful for longer distances (e.g., Casablanca–Dakhla).
• Buses and shared taxis: Common for locals, but less comfortable for a curated trip
.
With US Morocco Tours, you’ll have doortodoor transport with trusted drivers so you can focus on the experience, not the logistics.
10. Can I visit the Sahara Desert on a short trip?
To experience the true Sahara dunes (like Merzouga/Erg Chebbi), you generally need:
• At least 3 days / 2 nights from Marrakech or Fes
• One night in a desert camp
• Time for stops in the Atlas Mountains and oasis towns
If you have less time, we can design desert-flavored experiences closer to your base, stone deserts, palm oases, and dramatic landscapes, but for the classic golden dunes, you’ll want to give it a few days.
11. Is Morocco good for families?
Yes, Morocco can be an incredible destination for families:
• Kids love the markets, animals, colors, and desert adventures.
• Many riads and hotels are familyfriendly.
• Activities like cooking classes, pottery, calligraphy, surfing, and camel rides are perfect for all ages.
We design family itineraries with shorter travel days, flexible pacing, and kidfriendly experiences so everyone enjoys the journey.
12. What about food allergies, dietary needs, or vegetarian/vegan travelers?
Moroccan cuisine is rich in vegetables, grains, and legumes, so vegetarians and vegans can eat very well, especially with some planning.
• We can brief hotels and restaurants about allergies or dietary needs.
• Many places can accommodate glutenfree, dairyfree, or other restrictions with advance notice.
• We’ll make sure your itinerary includes places that understand and respect your needs, not just “hope for the best.”
13. How much should I tip in Morocco?
Tipping is customary and appreciated, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. As a general guideline:
• Cafés: 20–50 MAD
• Restaurants: 10–15% if service is not included
• Porters: 20–30 MAD per bag
• Drivers and guides: Depends on the length and quality of service
On our trips, we give you a simple tipping guide for your specific itinerary, so you always know what’s appropriate.
14. Is Morocco only about Marrakech?
Absolutely not.
Marrakech is vibrant and iconic, but Morocco is also:
• The Mediterranean north: Tangier, Tetouan, Chefchaouen
• The imperial cities: Fes, Meknes, Rabat
• The Atlas Mountains: Berber villages, cedar forests, valleys
• The Atlantic coast: Essaouira, Oualidia, Agadir, hidden fishing towns
• The Sahara: dunes, oases, desert camps
At US Morocco Tours, we specialize in fullcountry journeys that show you the Morocco most visitors never see.
15. Why should I travel with US Morocco Tours instead of planning everything myself?
You can plan Morocco on your own, but you’ll spend a lot of time guessing:
• Which riads are truly good vs. just photogenic

• How long transfers really take
• Which areas feel comfortable for you personally.
Traveling with US Morocco Tours means:
• A custom itinerary designed around you

• We refine it together until it feels exactly right.
• Once confirmed, we handle the logistics; you just show up and enjoy Morocco.
17. Does US Morocco Tours organize weddings and honeymoons in Morocco?
Yes, Morocco is one of the most magical places in the world for destination weddings and honeymoons, and we specialize in creating unforgettable celebrations. • Venue sourcing
• Full logistics
• Guest transportation
• Cultural experiences
• Ontheground coordination
For nonMuslim couples, the legal marriage typically takes place first in a church or cathedral, many of which date back to the early 20th century and offer beautiful, historic settings. A licensed preacher or officiant conducts the ceremony, ensuring everything is recognized and properly documented.
After the formal ceremony, the Moroccan celebration is something truly extraordinary, a night that feels lifted straight from A Thousand and One Nights.
From traditional musicians and henna artists to ornate caftans, lanternlit courtyards, and processions that honor both Moroccan and modern traditions, the bride, groom, and their guests are immersed in an atmosphere that is vibrant, elegant, and unforgettable.
For honeymoons, we design deeply romantic journeys that blend relaxation, adventure, and authentic Moroccan hospitality, from the Mediterranean coast to the Sahara Desert.

- Classical and Sufi performances
- Jazz nights

Morocco hosts world class festivals that attract global artists and create unforgettable cultural moments., including:

27. What should I know about cannabis in Morocco?
Morocco has a long history of cannabis cultivation, especially in the Rif Mountains, but its legal status is nuanced. Here’s what travelers need to know:
• Recreational cannabis is not legal in Morocco
Possession or use in public can lead to fines or legal issues. It is not something travelers should buy or consume casually.
• Medical and industrial cannabis are legal under regulation
Morocco legalized regulated cannabis production for medical, pharmaceutical, and industrial purposes in 2021. This does not apply to recreational use.
• Hashish is common in certain regions, but still illegal for locals as well as tourists
You may be offered hashish in places like Chefchaouen, the Rif, Tetouan, or Tangier. Politely decline, it’s not worth the risk.
• Cultural curiosity is welcome, but must be approached safely
Cannabis is part of Morocco’s agricultural and cultural history, and many travelers are curious about the traditions behind it. For those who want to understand the cultural and historical context, we can arrange educational visits that are safe, respectful, and legal.
• Educational field visits (for the curious and responsible traveler)
Depending on the season, we can organize a guided visit to the Rif Mountains to learn about:
- Traditional cannabis cultivation
- The agricultural history of the region
- The process of extracting hashish
- The production of cannabis oil
- How the harvest and processing change throughout the year
- The impact of new regulations on local communities
These visits are observational and cultural, not participatory. They are designed for travelers who want to understand the heritage, economy, and craftsmanship behind this centuries-old practice, without engaging in anything illegal or unsafe.
• Bottom line
Cannabis is woven into Morocco’s history, but recreational use is illegal. If you’re curious about the cultural side, we can help you explore it in a way that is educational, respectful, and completely safe, without putting you in any uncomfortable situations.
